Unlocking Student-led Learning: The keys to building authentic learning experiences

“Reinventing school means focusing on authentic learning and equity and harnessing the knowledge of human development, learning, and effective teaching accumulated over the last century and needed for the next.” - Linda Darling Hammond, Learning Policy Institute

Research on the benefit of games for learning has led to an explosion in the educational gaming industry of fun and informative games. How can we harness gameplay to lead authentic 21st-century learning in classrooms?

Well-designed games—unlike competitive multiple-choice quiz games—provide immersive experiences for students. Like novels, films, plays, and other media, teachers can use high-quality tools like games to help students access the curriculum while keeping engagement high. The “fun” of gameplay is a core component of why games are so successful with children, according to educators. Games can help children develop important, yet difficult, skills that they would otherwise avoid.

Join a conversation about how gameplay transforms students from passive consumers of content to active creators of new knowledge.

A Basic Introduction to Interactive Games For Skeptics

One thing I would say all teachers have in common is the shared attempt to better our craft. Is teaching a science or an art? Easy, both. That's why teaching is such a challenge, as well as a joy. I know a lot of teachers are using some of the same tools: specifically, Quizlet, Kahoot, and Gimkit. I look forward to sharing my experiences with some interactive games to enhance student engagement and hope to hear more ideas. As for me, I have two children that have had tremendous success in our district and I am so thankful for all of their teachers' dedication and commitment to student learning.

Table Top Conversations

In this session, you will have the opportunity to put your communication skills to work. We will have 10 tables set up (4 people to a table in order to distance safely) each with a discussion topic. 8 of the topics are already set for you, 2 of the topics will be open to allow the group to decide their own topics based on individual need, interest, and expertise. In the hour time slot, you will have time to be a part of 6 discussion groups (about 8 minutes per table top topic).  The idea of this session is to really strengthen connection and collaboration between staff members. We have so much we can learn from and share with each other. Please come with a chromebook (we'll have Padlet postings), an open mind, and a willingness to share what you know and feel.

NOTE: The topics will be the same in all of the four sessions, so you probably only want to attend once.

Potential Table Top Discussion Topics:
  1. Question Mark  (your choice)
  2. Question Mark  (your choice)
  3. What are some of the positive things that came out of last year's online learning that you hope to incorporate into your teaching this year? What stays? What goes?
  4. What have you learned about yourself throughout the pandemic that most surprised you?
  5. How much is too much screen time for kids? When to use technology and when not to use technology in the classroom?
  6. What are some strategies you use (or want to use) in your classroom to address the social and emotional well-being of your students? How are you going to know each child by name, strength and need?
  7. What are some engagement strategies you have used that are very effective and could be used in all classrooms?
  8. What are some successful strategies for communicating and involving families?
  9. What are some tech tools that work well to increase student learning?  If possible, add links or information into Padlet.
  10. What are your favorite self-care strategies that allow you to energize yourself throughout the year?

Building Collaboration Through the 4Cs with Breakout EDU

The National Education Association’s guide on the 4C’s, Preparing 21st Century Students for a Global Society, identifies collaboration as “a key ingredient to student success in today’s global society.” Collaborative learning is an approach that encourages students to work together to explore a concept and/or solve a problem. By engaging in organic peer-to-peer teaching and learning, collaboration allows students to interact with one another, ask questions, and share ideas as they work together.

Breakout EDU games are designed with the 4Cs at the forefront, challenging students to collaborate, communicate, and apply their creative and critical thinking skills to solve a series of challenging puzzles. Join this session to learn how to get started on building a collaborative environment in YOUR classroom with Breakout EDU!

Engaging Writers

Learn strategies to engage your elementary students in writing and build resiliency in reluctant writers! Join your colleagues for a hands-on writing experience that will give you practical skills  and materials to enhance writing in your classroom this year.  We often ask our students to communicate clearly, share their voice, and know their audience, but writing involves putting yourself on paper.  The fear of exposing your thoughts to others can be difficult to overcome. We will explore introducing writing in a way that will bring a smile to your students' faces and an eagerness to share!

The Show Must Go On

The focus in education has zeroed in on student mental health issues and what mindfulness can do in the classroom, but the topic of teacher mental health still remains taboo. This session discusses the importance of doing body scans and watching for mental health issues, using mindfulness but knowing when mindfulness isn’t enough, and other factors in the classroom that can affect mental health like burnout and secondary traumatic stress. Finally, how we can destigmatize mental health issues and create a culture of understanding.

Using Design Thinking tools in the classroom

Design Thinking has been the ‘buzzword’ of recent years, however, it’s successful approach in both business and education has been well documented for decades.
Design Thinking uses a reciprocal approach to design, focuses on empathy, prototyping, using failure as a learning tool, and collaborative work.
In this session:
  • I will present Design Thinking (or Design Cycle) as a tool for solving complex problems, adding innovation and creativity into your classroom, and as a logical structure for your students to work together.
  • I will also show examples of Design Thinking being used in the classroom.
This session is open to anyone interested, from all subject areas, and from any age group. If you have experience in working with Design Thinking, I would love to hear examples from within your classroom.
